Why Dryer Vent Cleaning Is More Important Than You Think
Most Reliable Chimney & Fireplace Services company for Homeowners Throughout King County Since 2011.
Dryer Vent Fires: A Real and Preventable Risk
The US Fire Administration reports that dryers cause approximately 15,500 house fires annually, resulting in 29 deaths and $192 million in property damage. The leading cause: failure to clean the dryer vent. Lint is highly flammable, and it accumulates in dryer vent systems over time, reducing airflow until the dryer overheats and ignites the accumulated lint. This is entirely preventable with annual professional cleaning.
Warning Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning
- Clothes taking more than one cycle to dry (most obvious sign)
- Dryer feels very hot to the touch during operation
- Clothes smell musty after drying, moisture isn't being expelled properly
- Excessive lint accumulating around the door seal after each load
- The exterior vent flap doesn't open when dryer is running
- Dryer shuts off mid-cycle (overheating protection activating)
- Last cleaning was more than 12 months ago
The Cleaning Process
Professional dryer vent cleaning involves: disconnecting the dryer from the vent, inspecting the full vent path from dryer connection to exterior cap, running professional rotary brushes through the entire vent length to dislodge accumulated lint, using a high-powered vacuum to capture all removed lint and debris, inspecting for damaged ductwork, improper materials (flexible plastic duct is a fire hazard), or improper routing that creates lint traps.
- Full vent path inspection (dryer to exterior)
- Rotary brush cleaning of entire duct length
- High-powered vacuum to remove all debris
- Exterior cap inspection and cleaning
- Airflow test after cleaning
- Documentation of any duct defects or hazards
How Often Should Dryer Vents Be Cleaned?
Annual cleaning is the standard recommendation for most households. Larger families running 10+ loads per week, households with pets (pet hair accelerates lint accumulation), or long duct runs (over 25 feet) may need cleaning every 6 months.
If your dryer vent hasn't been professionally cleaned in over a year, schedule service now, before the fall and winter increase in laundry use.
Common Dryer Vent Installation Problems
Beyond cleaning, we frequently identify installation problems that create safety hazards: flexible plastic ductwork (prohibited by building codes, must be rigid or semi-rigid metal), excessive ductwork length exceeding manufacturer specifications, too many 90-degree turns reducing airflow, ductwork exhausting into attics, crawlspaces, or garages (prohibited), and exterior caps with screens that trap lint.

What Homeowners Are Saying
"Shawn gave an estimate and quickly scheduled the cleaning. He did a great job and answered all our questions about fire safety and chimney maintenance!"
"We had a really bad experience with another contractor who took our money and left us with an unfinished and unsafe chimney. We were nervous about hiring someone else after that, but Chimney Pro Solutions made the whole process completely different. They took the time to explain what was wrong, showed us exactly what needed to be rebuilt, and were very clear about the work from the beginning. Their team rebuilt our chimney professionally, kept us updated throughout the project, and made sure everything was completed properly. After what we went through before, it was a huge relief to finally work with a company that was honest, reliable, and stood behind their work. We’re very happy with the rebuild and would definitely recommend them."
"I had a great experience with Chimney Pro Solutions. They were always responsive and willing to work with our schedule. I had a lot of difficulty with other chimney places getting a response or working with my schedule, but these folks actually care about their work and were always respectful and commutative from David responding to my emails and Sean doing the work and texting with updates. If you need high quality chimney services these are your folks! The photos of the before and after work speak for themselves so go ahead and give them a call!"
"Listen, when I tell you, Sean from Chimney Pro solutions is a good dude, I can’t stress it enough. He came out to assess my fireplace and chimney in March after we were smelling smoke in the house days after having a fire. He found my firebox was looking a little rough and that there was a solid amount of creosote in the chimney. He gave me several options for remediation/repair. Due to family emergency I had to leave town for several months. I wound up having reschedule repair service three times and he couldn’t have been more gracious and understanding. As for the service, he did a beautiful job. I didn’t realize how gross my fireplace was. It looks brand new and is safe to use. Plus he was meticulous about cleaning up after himself. I told him he’ll be our first call when it comes time for roof repair! Call these guys!!"
