Gas fireplace log set and pilot assembly common service issues in Seattle home

1. Pilot Light Won't Stay Lit

The most common gas fireplace problem. The pilot lights but goes out when you release the button. Cause: dirty or failed thermocouple. The thermocouple is a safety sensor that detects the pilot flame and signals the gas valve to stay open. If it's dirty, misaligned, or failed, it can't detect the flame even though it's burning. Fix: clean or replace the thermocouple ($150 to $250).

2. Yellow or Orange Flames

Gas fireplace flames should be blue with yellow tips. Predominantly yellow or orange flames indicate incomplete combustion, typically caused by a dirty burner, incorrect air mixture, or obstructed venting. This produces more carbon monoxide than normal and should be repaired promptly. Do not use the fireplace with yellow flames. Fix: burner cleaning, air mixture adjustment, or vent inspection ($150 to $350).

Yellow flames in a gas fireplace mean incomplete combustion and elevated carbon monoxide production. Stop using the fireplace and call a professional.

3. Fireplace Turns Off by Itself

A gas fireplace that cycles on and off or shuts off unexpectedly may have an ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensor) triggering due to low oxygen levels in the room, intended to be a safety feature. Other causes: thermostat issues, intermittent thermocouple contact, or venting problems that cause the draft to reverse. Fix: improve room ventilation, check thermocouple connection, or inspect venting ($150 to $400).

4. Soot or Black Staining on Glass

Soot buildup on the glass indicates incomplete combustion. Causes include: dirty burner, incorrect gas pressure, obstructed air intake, or dirty logs creating unusual burn patterns. Clean the glass and have the burner serviced. If soot returns quickly, there's an ongoing combustion issue requiring professional diagnosis.

5. Remote Control Doesn't Work

Before calling a technician: replace the batteries in both the remote transmitter and the receiver module (usually inside the firebox). If new batteries don't solve it, check for signal interference, try re-pairing the remote, and verify the receiver is properly connected. If the remote still doesn't work, the receiver module may need replacement ($150 to $300).

6. Gas Odor When Operating

A faint gas smell when the fireplace first starts (briefly) can be normal as residual gas clears. A persistent or strong gas smell is a leak, leave the home, don't operate any electrical switches, and call your gas company from outside. Do not return until the gas company clears the home. After the gas company checks, have a technician inspect gas connections, valve seals, and fittings.

Smell gas? Leave immediately. Don't use switches or phones inside. Call your gas company from outside the home. Never ignore a gas smell.

7. Blower or Fan Not Working

Most gas fireplaces include a circulation fan that distributes heat into the room. If it's not working: check the wall switch and thermostat settings, verify the fan switch is set to ON or AUTO (not OFF), check for a separate fuse or circuit breaker for the fan circuit, and let the fireplace warm up before expecting the fan to start (many have thermostatic controls that start the fan only when the firebox reaches temperature). If still not working, the fan motor or speed control may need replacement ($200 to $400).

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should gas fireplaces be serviced?▼

Annually, before the heating season. Regular service prevents most of the problems listed above and extends the lifespan of the unit.

Can I use my fireplace with a gas smell?▼

Never use a fireplace when you smell gas. Exit the home, don't operate electrical switches, call your gas company from outside.

My gas fireplace is 15 years old, should I replace it?▼

Not necessarily. Most gas fireplaces last 15 to 25 years with proper maintenance. A professional inspection and tune-up can extend the life of an older unit significantly.

"We had a really bad experience with another contractor who took our money and left us with an unfinished and unsafe chimney. We were nervous about hiring someone else after that, but Chimney Pro Solutions made the whole process completely different. They took the time to explain what was wrong, showed us exactly what needed to be rebuilt, and were very clear about the work from the beginning. Their team rebuilt our chimney professionally, kept us updated throughout the project, and made sure everything was completed properly. After what we went through before, it was a huge relief to finally work with a company that was honest, reliable, and stood behind their work. We’re very happy with the rebuild and would definitely recommend them."

"I had a great experience with Chimney Pro Solutions. They were always responsive and willing to work with our schedule. I had a lot of difficulty with other chimney places getting a response or working with my schedule, but these folks actually care about their work and were always respectful and commutative from David responding to my emails and Sean doing the work and texting with updates. If you need high quality chimney services these are your folks! The photos of the before and after work speak for themselves so go ahead and give them a call!"

"Listen, when I tell you, Sean from Chimney Pro solutions is a good dude, I can’t stress it enough. He came out to assess my fireplace and chimney in March after we were smelling smoke in the house days after having a fire. He found my firebox was looking a little rough and that there was a solid amount of creosote in the chimney. He gave me several options for remediation/repair. Due to family emergency I had to leave town for several months. I wound up having reschedule repair service three times and he couldn’t have been more gracious and understanding. As for the service, he did a beautiful job. I didn’t realize how gross my fireplace was. It looks brand new and is safe to use. Plus he was meticulous about cleaning up after himself. I told him he’ll be our first call when it comes time for roof repair! Call these guys!!"
