Gas Fireplace vs. Wood Fireplace: Which Is Right for Your Seattle Home?
Most Reliable Chimney & Fireplace Services company for Homeowners Throughout King County Since 2011.
The Seattle Context: Why This Decision Is Different Here
Seattle's climate, air quality regulations, and utility costs create specific considerations that don't apply everywhere. Key Seattle factors: Puget Sound Clean Air Agency burn bans (frequently prohibit wood burning during winter inversions), relatively affordable natural gas rates, abundance of local firewood but variable quality, and a mild but damp climate that makes reliable, convenient heat appealing.
Gas Fireplace Advantages
- Instant heat, on in seconds, off when done, no waiting for coals to cool
- Operates during Puget Sound burn bans (major Seattle-area advantage)
- No wood storage, ash cleanup, or fire-tending required
- Thermostat control for consistent temperature
- Cleaner combustion, less particulate matter, less creosote
- Annual maintenance is minimal
- Safer for households with young children or elderly residents
- Works during power outages (if pilot light model)
Wood Fireplace/Insert Advantages
- Higher heat output per BTU, better for serious heating
- Lower operating cost if you have access to affordable or free firewood
- No dependence on gas utility
- More primal ambiance, authentic crackling fire, wood smell
- Can be primary heat source during extended cold weather
- Some homeowners prefer the ritual of fire-building
The Burn Ban Factor
This is the decisive factor for many Seattle homeowners. The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issues Stage 1 and Stage 2 burn bans during winter temperature inversions when pollution accumulates in the basin. Stage 2 bans prohibit use of wood fireplaces and wood stoves even as the sole source of heat. Burn bans have become more frequent in recent years. Gas fireplaces are exempt from burn bans, making them significantly more reliable as a heat source during the Seattle winter.
The Puget Sound area averages 20 to 30 wood-burning ban days per winter. If you want a fireplace you can actually use reliably, gas is the more practical choice.
Converting Wood to Gas: What's Involved
Converting a wood-burning fireplace to gas typically involves: installing a gas fireplace insert (most practical), routing a gas line to the fireplace location, installing appropriate venting (direct vent or vented through existing flue with new liner), and custom finishing work around the insert. Total cost: $3,500 to $7,000 installed, depending on fireplace size, gas line distance, and finishing. Federal tax credits of up to $600 are available for high-efficiency gas fireplaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert my existing wood fireplace to gas?▼
Yes, gas inserts are designed specifically for this. They fit into the existing firebox, use the existing chimney structure with a new liner, and can be finished to look like original masonry.
Does gas fireplace smell like gas?▼
A brief faint odor when first starting is normal as residual gas clears. Persistent gas smell indicates a leak and requires immediate professional service.
Which adds more value to a home, gas or wood fireplace?▼
Both add value. Gas fireplaces tend to appeal to more buyers due to convenience and burn ban compliance. In high-end Seattle neighborhoods, a custom gas fireplace often commands a premium.

What Homeowners Are Saying
"Shawn gave an estimate and quickly scheduled the cleaning. He did a great job and answered all our questions about fire safety and chimney maintenance!"
"We had a really bad experience with another contractor who took our money and left us with an unfinished and unsafe chimney. We were nervous about hiring someone else after that, but Chimney Pro Solutions made the whole process completely different. They took the time to explain what was wrong, showed us exactly what needed to be rebuilt, and were very clear about the work from the beginning. Their team rebuilt our chimney professionally, kept us updated throughout the project, and made sure everything was completed properly. After what we went through before, it was a huge relief to finally work with a company that was honest, reliable, and stood behind their work. We’re very happy with the rebuild and would definitely recommend them."
"I had a great experience with Chimney Pro Solutions. They were always responsive and willing to work with our schedule. I had a lot of difficulty with other chimney places getting a response or working with my schedule, but these folks actually care about their work and were always respectful and commutative from David responding to my emails and Sean doing the work and texting with updates. If you need high quality chimney services these are your folks! The photos of the before and after work speak for themselves so go ahead and give them a call!"
"Listen, when I tell you, Sean from Chimney Pro solutions is a good dude, I can’t stress it enough. He came out to assess my fireplace and chimney in March after we were smelling smoke in the house days after having a fire. He found my firebox was looking a little rough and that there was a solid amount of creosote in the chimney. He gave me several options for remediation/repair. Due to family emergency I had to leave town for several months. I wound up having reschedule repair service three times and he couldn’t have been more gracious and understanding. As for the service, he did a beautiful job. I didn’t realize how gross my fireplace was. It looks brand new and is safe to use. Plus he was meticulous about cleaning up after himself. I told him he’ll be our first call when it comes time for roof repair! Call these guys!!"
