Two stainless steel chimney caps with pyramid lids and mesh screens on a gray masonry chimney

Why Chimney Caps Matter in the Pacific Northwest

An uncapped chimney in Seattle is an invitation for water damage. Rain falls directly into the open flue, saturating the flue liner, damper, and firebox. Over time, this causes rust, efflorescence, deteriorating mortar, and potential structural damage. Chimney caps are inexpensive insurance, a $200 to $600 cap prevents thousands in water damage repairs.

What to Look for in a Chimney Cap for Seattle

  • Material: stainless steel (type 304 or 316) or copper, galvanized steel rusts within 5 to 10 years in Seattle's wet climate
  • Coverage area: cap should extend 2+ inches beyond the flue opening on all sides
  • Rain cover height: higher covers provide better rain protection in driving wind
  • Mesh screen: 5/8-inch mesh keeps animals out while allowing proper draft
  • Secure attachment: caps must be mechanically fastened, not just set in place

Stainless Steel Caps: The Best Value

Type 304 stainless steel caps are the standard recommendation for Pacific Northwest homes. They're corrosion-resistant, durable in all weather conditions, and typically carry lifetime warranties. Expect to pay $150 to $400 for a quality stainless cap including professional installation. Avoid cheap galvanized caps from hardware stores, they rust within 5 to 10 years.

Galvanized caps are false economy in Seattle. You'll replace them 3 to 4 times in the time a quality stainless cap lasts. Pay once, pay right.

Copper Caps: Premium Choice for Historic Homes

Copper chimney caps are the premium choice, developing a beautiful patina over time that many historic Seattle and Bellevue homeowners prefer. They're virtually maintenance-free, last 50+ years, and match the architectural character of older homes. Cost: $400 to $1,000 installed depending on size.

Multi-Flue Caps

Homes with multiple flues (common in older Seattle homes with separate wood and gas systems) need multi-flue caps that cover all openings with one sealed unit. This prevents animal entry through any uncapped flue and provides unified water protection. Custom fabrication is required for multi-flue chimneys, off-the-shelf caps rarely fit correctly.

Wind-Resistant Caps for Exposed Locations

Homes on ridgelines, hills, or with significant wind exposure (common in Renton Highlands, Bellevue highlands, and Mercer Island) may benefit from rotating or wind-resistant cap designs that prevent wind-driven downdrafts from pushing smoke back into the home. Ask about these if you experience smoke backdraft in windy conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a chimney cap?▼

Yes. Uncapped chimneys lose an estimated $300 to $600 per year in heat loss, accumulate water damage, and invite animal nesting. A chimney cap pays for itself quickly.

My chimney cap was installed by a previous owner, should I replace it?▼

If it's galvanized steel, more than 10 years old, or showing rust, replacement is worthwhile. If it's stainless or copper and intact, it may be fine, a quick inspection tells us the condition.

Can I install a chimney cap myself?▼

Rooftop chimney cap installation requires ladder safety, proper measurement, and secure fastening. We recommend professional installation for safety and to ensure proper fit and waterproofing.

"We had a really bad experience with another contractor who took our money and left us with an unfinished and unsafe chimney. We were nervous about hiring someone else after that, but Chimney Pro Solutions made the whole process completely different. They took the time to explain what was wrong, showed us exactly what needed to be rebuilt, and were very clear about the work from the beginning. Their team rebuilt our chimney professionally, kept us updated throughout the project, and made sure everything was completed properly. After what we went through before, it was a huge relief to finally work with a company that was honest, reliable, and stood behind their work. We’re very happy with the rebuild and would definitely recommend them."

"I had a great experience with Chimney Pro Solutions. They were always responsive and willing to work with our schedule. I had a lot of difficulty with other chimney places getting a response or working with my schedule, but these folks actually care about their work and were always respectful and commutative from David responding to my emails and Sean doing the work and texting with updates. If you need high quality chimney services these are your folks! The photos of the before and after work speak for themselves so go ahead and give them a call!"

"Listen, when I tell you, Sean from Chimney Pro solutions is a good dude, I can’t stress it enough. He came out to assess my fireplace and chimney in March after we were smelling smoke in the house days after having a fire. He found my firebox was looking a little rough and that there was a solid amount of creosote in the chimney. He gave me several options for remediation/repair. Due to family emergency I had to leave town for several months. I wound up having reschedule repair service three times and he couldn’t have been more gracious and understanding. As for the service, he did a beautiful job. I didn’t realize how gross my fireplace was. It looks brand new and is safe to use. Plus he was meticulous about cleaning up after himself. I told him he’ll be our first call when it comes time for roof repair! Call these guys!!"
