Wood burning fireplace with efficient fire in Seattle area home

Why Traditional Fireplaces Are So Inefficient

Traditional masonry fireplaces are beautiful but thermally inefficient. Standard open fireplaces operate at only 10 to 20% efficiency, meaning 80 to 90% of the heat generated goes straight up the flue. Worse, they often create negative pressure that draws warm room air up the chimney even when not in use. But there are practical steps that significantly improve heat output.

1. Use Properly Seasoned Wood

This is the single biggest impact change. Seasoned hardwood (dried for 12 to 24 months) has moisture content below 20% and burns cleanly with high heat output. Green or wet wood has moisture content of 50%+, it smolders, produces little heat, and generates 5 to 10x more creosote. Split and stack wood at least 12 months before burning. Use a moisture meter to verify content below 20%.

Burning wet wood in Seattle's climate is a double problem: low heat output and accelerated creosote buildup requiring more frequent cleaning.

2. Build Top-Down Fires

The traditional bottom-up fire wastes heat while the wood dries and ignites. Top-down fires (large logs on bottom, medium logs above, kindling on top, with a fire started at the top) establish a hot draft immediately, produce less smoke, and ignite the larger logs from above with less tending. This technique dramatically reduces smoke-up problems and produces cleaner combustion.

3. Install a Fireplace Insert

The single most impactful efficiency upgrade. A gas or wood-burning insert converts an open fireplace into a closed combustion system with efficiency ratings of 70 to 90%. Inserts fit into the existing firebox opening, use the existing chimney (usually with a new liner), and typically recover their cost in fuel savings within 3 to 5 years in a Seattle climate.

  • Gas inserts: 70 to 85% efficiency, convenient, operate during burn bans
  • Wood inserts: 75 to 90% efficiency, requires seasoned wood, more heat output
  • Pellet inserts: 80 to 90% efficiency, consistent heat, automated fuel delivery
  • Typical installed cost: $3,000 to $6,000, eligible for federal tax credits

4. Close the Damper When Not in Use

An open damper on an unused fireplace acts like a hole in your ceiling, warm air escapes continuously. Install a top-mounted damper (which also functions as a chimney cap) for the most effective seal. Standard throat dampers, especially older ones, seal poorly. A good top damper can reduce heating bills by 10 to 30% in Seattle's cool climate.

5. Add Glass Doors

Glass fireplace doors reduce heat loss significantly when the fire is dying down and overnight. Choose doors with air-tight seals and heat-resistant glass. During active burning, keep doors partially or fully open for adequate combustion air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to get a gas insert or wood insert?▼

Gas inserts offer more convenience, instant on/off, operates during burn bans, cleaner. Wood inserts offer more heat output and lower operating cost if you have access to firewood. Gas is the most popular choice in Seattle due to burn ban frequency.

What wood burns best in the Seattle area?▼

Best choices: Madrone, apple, cherry (dense hardwoods), or oak and alder (common and widely available seasoned locally). Avoid fir, pine, and other softwoods, they burn fast and produce more creosote.

How do I know if my wood is seasoned enough to burn?▼

Use a moisture meter ($20 to $40 at hardware stores), target below 20% moisture content. Visually, well-seasoned wood has darkened ends, cracks at the cut ends, and feels lighter than green wood.

"We had a really bad experience with another contractor who took our money and left us with an unfinished and unsafe chimney. We were nervous about hiring someone else after that, but Chimney Pro Solutions made the whole process completely different. They took the time to explain what was wrong, showed us exactly what needed to be rebuilt, and were very clear about the work from the beginning. Their team rebuilt our chimney professionally, kept us updated throughout the project, and made sure everything was completed properly. After what we went through before, it was a huge relief to finally work with a company that was honest, reliable, and stood behind their work. We’re very happy with the rebuild and would definitely recommend them."

I had a lot of difficulty with other chimney places getting a response or working with my schedule, but these folks actually care about their work and were always respectful and commutative from David responding to my emails and Sean doing the work and texting with updates. If you need high quality chimney services these are your folks! The photos of the before and after work speak for themselves so go ahead and give them a call!"

"Listen, when I tell you, Sean from Chimney Pro solutions is a good dude, I can’t stress it enough. He came out to assess my fireplace and chimney in March after we were smelling smoke in the house days after having a fire. He found my firebox was looking a little rough and that there was a solid amount of creosote in the chimney. He gave me several options for remediation/repair. Due to family emergency I had to leave town for several months. I wound up having reschedule repair service three times and he couldn’t have been more gracious and understanding. As for the service, he did a beautiful job. I didn’t realize how gross my fireplace was. It looks brand new and is safe to use. Plus he was meticulous about cleaning up after himself. I told him he’ll be our first call when it comes time for roof repair! Call these guys!!"
